What is the piece’s impact? The area where these pieces were made has very little forest cover, and development pressures are leading to more being cut down. Artists began painting traditional Madhubani pieces on the trees in order to lend them some value not seen in the trees alone. At the time of the writing of this article, more than 100 trees were painted.

How does this project relate to this change as art? The artists hope the paintings might discourage people from removing the trees and likewise encourage tourism to the area.“The Madhubani artists believe that they are showing the world how an art form can be used to convey a strong social message ‘in an effective way’.” (source)

What makes this an artistic project? Artists are using a traditional form of painting, in an attempt to lend value to something that has a seemingly lesser value.
