Artist: Nek Chand
Title: Rock Garden of Chandigarh
Year created: 1957 – 1976
Location: Chandigarh, India
Materials: local industrial and residential waste.
What is the piece’s impact? As a result of the artistic intervention on this site, in 1976 the park was inaugurated as a public space. The park is now over forty-acres (160,000 m²), and is completely built of locally sourced industrial and residential waste.
How does this project relate to this change as art? Low/no environmental impact in the development of each of the individual pieces. The collection of these pieces, brought a new kind of public appreciation of this space. After public opinion saved the park from destruction in 1976, Nek Chand was put on a gov’t salary (and had a staff) to maintain the area. Then Nek Chand Foundation, a registered charity, was formed in 1997. They maintain the park. There are over 5,000 visitors/day to the site.
What makes this an artistic project? It is a 12 acre sculpture garden created by self-taught artist Nek Chand.
