Random Acts of Theatre, by the Freedom Foundation

Organization: The Freedom Foundation

Title:  Random Acts of Theatre (RATco)

Year created: unknown

Location: Selma and Denver, USA

Materials: Theater, performance

What is the piece’s impact? The art is an outcome of a program meant to bring together volunteers, many professional performers, with youth, many from disadvantaged backgrounds. Together they express themselves and learn how to produce quality works of performance art.

How does this project relate to this change as art? The youth are entrusted to manage all of the major elements of each performance. This includes set design, music and sound, costumes, choreography, marketing/promotion, administration, and all aspects of production. Many of the youth are able to travel, some for the first time, out of Selma, in order to perform in front of audiences from as far as New York City.

What makes this an artistic project? It’s rooted in theater and performance.

Notes: There is currently a kickstater campain on for the making of a documentary about this organization called “I Will Dance” (the trailer is above). To support this film, visit: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1124626912/i-will-dance-the-documentary
