Materials: photography and journalism program. Media arts program, video, broadcasting and spoken word were later added.

What is the piece’s impact? The program aims to “reduce violence in the lives of youth and in our communities by building a team of youth who communicate a message of non-violence.” It’s programs and methods of educating against violence have reached thousands. They have given hundreds of community safety programs in numerous cities and has affected change on the curriculum in schools in Toronto and Montreal.

How does this project relate to this change as art? “Through the Media Arts Program (MAP) youth who have been witnesses, victims and/or perpetrators of violence, learn how to identify, analyze and document the issues surrounding the violence in their lives and develop reality-based solutions to end violence”(source). They frequently do this using artistic practices, such as media arts and spoken word to communicate issues around violence. 

What makes this an artistic project? The use of media arts to communicate issues around violence.
