Garden – a poetic fieldwork

Artist: Lois Weinberger with henke & schreieck architekten

Title: Garten-eine poetische Feldarbeit,  (Garden – a poetic fieldwork)

Year created:1999

Location:Neue Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Universität Innsbruck, Austria

Materials: steel grates forming a box over natural ground

What is the piece’s impact? Creates a large space (length: 37m, width: 4m, height: 3.7m) where what ever is seeded has the chance to grow without being walked on or mowed over.

How does this project relate to this change as art? It forces one area of land to remain untouched. Also interesting in that the piece produces a somewhat wild landscape encased in metal, much like its part of an old-time zoo exhibit. However, as it is never trimmed or otherwise landscaped it grows wild plants.

What makes this an artistic project? It’s a sculptural piece, conceived and produced by a contemporary artist.
